Lifeguard certification course

This American Red Cross lifeguarding course provides skills and knowledge necessary to perform water rescue, as well as First Aid and CPR. Participants will receive a Red Cross Lifeguarding and First Aid, and CPR/AED for professional rescuer certificates.

Class options

  1. Full Lifeguard Certification + Lifeguard/CPR Class = $400 ($370 for MBS students and staff)
  2. Recertification for Lifeguard/CPR Class = $275 ($245 for MBS students and staff)


You must attend all dates for class chosen. The name of the course offered is “Lifeguard Training, First Aid, & CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.” All classes will be held at The Morristown Beard School Pool, 70 Whippany Road, Morristown, NJ (in the Athletic Building).

There is a registration fee of $79 for the first student and a max of $129 per family per calendar year. This will be added to your registration upon signing up for the course. This is nonrefundable for any reason.

Pre-work required

YOU CANNOT ATTEND CLASS WITHOUT COMPLETING THE ONLINE COURSE FIRST! You must pay for your class in full in order to receive the online blended learning portion of the course. Once payment has been received, you are given the following email with active links:

This blended learning course includes an online portion and an instructor-led classroom skills session. The online portion must be completed before attending the in-class portion. Most learners complete the online portion in approximately 4-8 hours. However, your experience may vary widely based on several factors including your PC, internet speed and previous training. We recommend beginning the online session as soon as possible to ensure you have completed it prior to the in-person skill session. The online portion must be taken on a PC or tablet with a high-speed Internet connection (see below for the complete set of PC/tablet requirements for this online course).

Please be prepared to provide your instructor with proof that you completed the online portion using one of the following methods:

  • Print your online course completion record available at the end of from the course and show it to your instructor – it will read “Proceed to Skill Session”
  • Show your instructor the email you received confirming completion of the online portion
  • Login to the online portion and show your instructor the completion status that appears above the  “Launch Course” button

Pre-requisites required, including pre-test swim portion

To take the course, students must be 15 years of age by the end of the course. Proof of age will be required. Attendance at all classes is required.

Passing a pre-test swim is required to take the course. Participants must swim 300 yards continuously as follows – 100 yards front crawl; 100 yards breaststroke; 100 yards front crawl or breaststroke. Swimming goggles may be used during the 300 yard swim. Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Swim 20 yards, submerge 7–10 feet, retrieve a ten-pound brick, and swim 20 yards carrying the brick in both hands within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Goggles may not be worn during this swim. If you do not pass the pretest- we will give you the opportunity to retake it again at our next scheduled lifeguard class, but no refunds will be given. Please be sure to practice ahead of time so that you know you can pass this pre-test before attending our class.
